While Birkenstock sandals are crazy popular here (all the teachers wear them at the Lycée Français I teach at), most Americans still equate them with granola and bean sprout-eating hippies. While it's true that we bought our birkenstocks at the Health Food store in Laguna Beach when I was growing up, it was a beachey surfer thing to wear at the time.
